Seedings are out

Hey

The seedings for the Men's NCAA Soccer tournament are out. The Chicago area was able to place three entries (UIC, DePaul, and Northwestern) into the field of 48. Unfortunately, Loyola lost out due to their performance last weekend in the Horizon League Tournament.

UIC are champions!

Hey

UIC played their way into the NCAA tournament by winning the Horizon League tournament this weekend. The Flames beat Wright State, UW Milwaukee, and UW Green Bay to win the tournament. The story is below.

http://uicflames.cstv.com/sports/m-soccer/recaps/111807aab.html

Tournament host and regular season champion Loyola lost to UW Green Bay in the semifinal and now have to hope for an at large bid.

DePaul lost to Notre Dame in the Big East semifinals but look assured to get an at large bid into the NCAA tournament.

In Fire news, Paulo Wanchope has retired. He played eleven games and scored two goals for the Fire. The story is below.

Fire's loss and college supremacy

Hey

The Fire lost in their bid to make it to the MLS Cup by losing to the New England Revolution 1-0. The goal was scored on a fantastic bicycle kick by Taylor Twellman. Even though they lost, the Fire made a huge improvement. It was so big, Chris Armas was thinking about not retiring. But he ultimately did retire.

On the college scene, UIC and Loyola both move on to the Horizon League Championships.

UIC continues to tear it up with a 4-0 victory over Wright State. They will play Milwaukee at 7:30 PM at Loyola Soccer Park.

Loyola received a bye and will play Green Bay on Nov. 16 at 5:00PM at Loyola Soccer Park.

Depaul advanced to the Big East Semifinals with a 1-0 win over Cincinatti. Whitney Young product Willy Lara started. They next will face Notre Dame at 5:00 PM on Friday the 16th. The game will be televised on CSTV.

Latest Happenings

Congratulations goes out to Andrew Ricks and the Lane Tech boys soccer team for once again winning their sectional and making it farther than any other city school in this year's state tournament.

The Chicago Fire advanced to the conference final by beating DC United in a two game series 3-2. The second game was exciting with the Fire roaring out to a two goal lead only to watch it disappaer in a classic United surge that saw United score two in the second half. But the Fire were able to hold on and now face the New England Revolution this Thursday. The game will be televised on ESPN 2 at 6:30 Central. I think with their new look, the Fire can beat the Revolution (like they did a month ago) and get to the MLS Cup this year. Get your plane tix to DC ready! You can keep track of all the Chicago Fire and MLS activities by visiting their web site.

Chicago Soccer is having a huge sale on 06-07 gear. Get over there to get some great gear at a great price.

Blanco Blanco Blanco

Hey

I will be the first to say I was dead wrong about what Blanco would do to the Fire when he arrived. I thought he would be a huge disruption and a disappointment. He has made this team into a fighting machine with a purpose. Some of his antics are still there but his leadership on and off the field have brought the team up a notch. Check out articles and videos of Blanco at http://www.chicago-fire.com/

Speaking of the word Blanco, local boy Brad Guzan was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in just his third campaign. Check out the article at http://www.mlsnet.com/.

The state playoffs continue on with the Class AA quarters tomorrow. Congratulations go out to Francis Parker High School as they took 4th place in the Class A tournament. You can find full coverage of the tournament and blog about soccer topics at http://www.suntimes.com/.

Last but not least, Soccer Post is having a 50% shoe sale going on right now. Pass on to those you think need new boots!

If you have any news or stories, please post or let me know and I will post them up on the blog.

Busy soccer weekend

It was a busy soccer weekend here in Chicago.

First and most importantly, our national team beat Mexico 2-1 to win the Gold Cup. This win affords the US entry into the Continental Champions tournament held in South Africa in 2009. This tournament is normally used as a dry run for the World Cup so winning the Gold Cup allows the US to gather some extra experience playing in South Africa.

The Fire played and beat Polish side Crakovia at Toyota Park 1-0. The story is below. They also have two senior international spots available since Guerrero received his green card and they let go of Bedrosian.

Fire fire Sarachan, players wonder why

Hey

I saw that the Fire fired Dave Sarachan. The players are not happy. I may be going out on a limb but is this the first sign of the Blanco era. I find it interesting that the last sentence in the article is how Guppy wants to have a new coach in by the time Blanco gets to the team. Tail wagging the dog? The yahoo article is below.

Fire continue struggles

Hey

The Fire played to a scoreless tie with Real Salt Lake. The Fire changed the lineup a bit which is good because they need a spark on both ends. I'm surprised I'm saying this but having Blanco here soon should be a good thing for the club. The game recap is below.

Hey

Jozimore Altidore and Juan Pablo Angel had their way with the Fire scoring two goals in two minutes as the New York Red Bulls beat the Fire 3-0. Go to www.soccernet.com to view the highlights. The goals by Angel are outstanding and show how completely out of position the Fire defense was last night.

Fire continue to roll

Hey

The Fire beat Houston and a pathetic Sunday crowd in Houston to continue unbeaten. That said, I am worried about what Blanco will bring to team in the coming weeks. Go vote for Chris Rolfe as goal of the week.
